A Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Political Science Department, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has indicated that some people working at the Volta River Authority have to be punished for the dam spillage that has caused discomfort for some Ghanaians.

He believes that people who are in charge slept on their jobs because the spillage could have been done in bits to prevent the mass spillage that has rendered several people homeless.

The University Don made this known in a post shared via his Facebook page after the President’s visit to victims of the spillage.

He said “When the water was getting too full, didn’t we see? Couldn’t we have spilled water from the Akosombo Dam bit by bit to avert the current havoc? Someone may have slept on the job and there should be punishment for such dereliction“.

Hundreds of houses have been submerged and roads cut off in parts of the Volta and Eastern regions following the spillage of the Akosombo dam.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) as of Friday, October 13, 20 has said that over 1,000 people have been displaced by the floods.

The spillage of the dam has also caused significant damage to infrastructure in the affected areas.

NADMO has said that it is working to provide relief to those affected by the floods.
