After finally living up to their potential by winning the African Cup of Nations in 2019, Algeria fell right back to earth in the next tournament.

The Fennec foxes finished bottom in a group containing Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone. It is why this years tournament in Ivory Coast 2023 means more to them.  

The North African giants are drawn in Group D alongside Angola, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.

How they qualified:

Algerian finished top of Group F of the qualifiers with 16 points after winning 5 matches, getting one draw with zero losses. 

Player to watch: Mohamed Amin Ammoura

In, Mohamed Amin Amoura, Algeria have one of the continent’s hottest prospects.

The 23-year-old got the World’s attention when he scored 16 goals for Saint-Geloise in Belgium last year.

Amoura is direct and extremely focused on end product. As such, dribbling and the aesthetics of the game are not his primary focus even though he is quite capable when the need arises.  

Coach: Djamel Belmadi

For a country with a strong taste and the resources to hire good expatriate coaches, Algeria have shown remarkable faith in Djamel Belmadi.

And rightly so. The 47-year-old delivered where many failed, winning the tournament in 2019 in Egypt at the expense of Senegal.

This month’s tournament in Ivory Coast will be his third since taking charge of the Fennec Foxes.

In five years, Belmadi has forged a strong unit capable of playing dominant, expansive football while being capable of being compact and pragmatic.
