Ampem Darkoa Ladies will compete for a bronze medal after missing out on a place in Sunday’s final of the CAF Women’s Champions League.

On Wednesday, the Ghanaian champions suffered a 3-2 loss on penalties to Sporting Casablanca in the semifinals in San Pedro.

Despite going ahead on two occasions, a combination of unforced errors and some questionable refereeing caused their downfall.

Comfort Yeboah is mobbed by her teammates after opening the scoring last night

Jennifer Owusuaa had restored Ampem Darkoa’s lead with an excellent goal from distance after Comfort Yeboah had turned the ball into her own net to cancel an earlier goal she scored.

However, their hard work was undone when a controversial penalty was awarded against the Ghanaian champions.

The penalty was allowed to stand without a review by VAR even though replays showed the Moroccan had gone down without any significant contact from Abena Anomaa. The penalty was subsequently converted, restoring parity.

Buoyed by the leveler, Casablanca poured forward in droves and nearly went ahead but for Comfort Yeboah’s goal-line clearance.

Tried as they did, Casablanca could not find a way past the resilient Ghanaians even in extra time.

The penalty shoot-out ended in heartbreak for Ampem Darkoa who converted only two of their kicks as against Sporting Casablanca’s three.

The Moroccans will face inaugural champions Mamelodi Sundowns in Sunday’s final.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies, will settle for a third place play off against A.S FAR of Morocco on Saturday.
