Aquaculture advocate and reigning Bono East Regional Best Fisherman, Kevin Williams Asuma has appealed to the Government to take steps to stop people from including imported canned fish products, such as sardines and mackerel, in Christmas hampers, and help boost local production of fish by replacing the imported fish with local fish.
Mr Asuma, a 2018 Mandela Washington Fellow who runs The Eagles’ Croft, an innovative catfish farm in the Bono East Region, argued that fish farming holds great potential in helping address the country’s unemployment challenge and the Government ought to intervene strategically to ensure that it thrives.
“Aquaculture offers a massive potential for job creation as the value chain is pregnant with many activities that have profitable economic values.
At the national level, the government should ban the inclusion of canned fish products such as sardines and mackerels in Christmas hampers…This move will go a long way to support the growth of indigenous factories…,” he explained.
Government institutions (as well as private ones) typically include imported canned fish in Christmas gifts. But Mr Asuma thinks that this act compromises the local fishing economy of the country and must be stopped.
