Lawyer and experienced Chartered Accountant Solomon Bitian Damtar, who has been elected assemblyman for the Tomoni Electoral Area in the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District of the Savannah Region, has said that high personal achievement should impose a duty on people to serve their communities at the local governance level.
Mr Bitian, a lawyer and chartered accountant, stressed that if one’s achievement does not have a positive impact on their communities of birth, then such achievement is no achievement at all.
He is of the opinion that people, especially high-achieving individuals ought to be interested in governance at the local level since that is where people feel the effects of political decisions the hardest.
Speaking on his decision to run for the post of assembly member and not something higher such as a Member of Parliament (MP) given his educational attainment and professional achievements, Lawyer Damtar stressed that he is not interested in parliamentary elections but not to serve his people as an assembly member.
“Concerning the level of my status and achievement, I wish to be a living example that, personal achievements that are not linked to the liberation of our communities of birth are no achievements. We should and must be interested in our local governance and administration issues for that is where the people feel the incidence of political decisions. The district serves as the primary point of contact in the service of our people and it is not always about seeking to become an MP or a minister. We should dedicate our knowledge and experiences to the progress of our communities and that is the home call to which I have answered.
Highly qualified youth with an interest in local governance should see this as a wake-up call to duty of serving their homeland. I have had to answer the question of why am I contesting as an assembly member and not an MP severally; My Answer has been that I do not want to be an MP but an Assembly Member. If ever I want to be an MP, I would contest,” he said in an interview with mynewsgh.com.
Mr Damtar added that his immediate preoccupation will be to work to ensure that electricity is extended to the Tomoni Electoral Area; the availability of water and sanitation are improved; and a decent primary school building is put up.
“My vision is to collaborate with the District Assembly and all stakeholders in making Tomoni Electoral Area a better community for the electorates,” he noted.
SB Damtar was recently overwhelmingly elected as an assembly member of the Tomoni Electoral Area.
