George “Funky” Brown, the drummer and one of the main songwriters of Kool & The Gang, died in Los Angeles on November 16, 2023, at the age of 74, from lung cancer. 

He was a beloved and respected member of the music community,and his passing is a great loss to the world of funk and soul music.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1949, Brown began playing drums at an early age. Inspired by jazz drummers such as Art Blakey and Buddy Rich, he quickly developed his own unique style. 

In the early 1960s, he joined a band called the Jazziacs, which later changed its name to the Soul Brothers.

Kool & the Gang’s first album, “Live at the Bronco Bowl,” was released in 1971. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Kool & the Gang as one of the leading funk bands of the 1970s.

In the 1980s, Kool & the Gang’s sound evolved into a more pop-oriented style. They scored a number of hit singles,including “Celebration” (1980), “Get Down on It” (1981), and “Joanna” (1983). They also continued to tour extensively,and they were a popular attraction at concerts and festivals around the world.

He will be remembered as one of the greatest drummers of all time, and his music will continue to inspire and entertain people for generations to come.
