Fish farmer and Social Justice and Sustainable Development advocate Kevin Williams Asuma has stated that fish farming holds great potential in addressing Ghana’s unemployment challenge, especially unemployment among the youth and rural women.
Mr Asuma, who was recently adjudged the Bono East Regional Best Fisher at this year’s National Farmers’ Day Celebration, “believes in the creation of an industry powered by local innovation into the breeding, rearing and processing of catfish to feed the local population.
“Aquaculture can induce the successful establishment of a robust local industry where the youth is encouraged to venture into fish farming.
Aquaculture offers a massive potential for job creation as the value chain is pregnant with many activities that have profitable economic values,” he explained.
“I call on the government to step in to support catfish farming and [fish farming in general] by subsidizing fish feeds that have seen tremendous cutthroat prices in the last twenty-four months and also help to import fish feed making machines like the extruder machines to help farmers make their feed to cut down on the cost of production,” he appealed.
