Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South and Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr Clement Apaak has advised heads of senior high schools to resist the temptation to charge Senior High School(SHS) students fees no matter what challenge they face in administering their schools.
Dr Apaak reminded the headmasters and headmistresses that as employees of the Ghana Education Service (GES), they must follow the rules and regulations regarding charging fees to the letter.
Speaking in an interview with Media General today [December 16, 2023], Dr Apaak regretted that some heads of senior high schools have been interdicted for charging unapproved fees. He added that the heads need to report whatever challenges they face to the GES and wait for their direction.
“Follow the rules of the game as presented to you by GES or the Ministry. Don’t be father Christmas…It is unfortunate that we have to start the school year with interdictions.
For me, the position that I hold is that if someone owns the schools, then you are working for someone, no matter how justified the reasons are, the rule states clearly that do not charge any fees in any shape or form. So you don’t charge in any shape or form, there are consequences…The right thing to do is to just report that there is no unit on your prepaid and you will wait until such a time that the authorities will provide the prepaid,” he advised.
Dr Apaak’s piece of advice comes after the GES swiftly interdicted 11 heads of senior high schools for charging first-year students unapproved fees.
