Nearly 20 New Patriotic Party Lawmakers have announced they will not seek re-election in 2024 due to various factors.

MyNewsGh.com checks shows about 17 lawmakers on the ticket of the NPP are not returning to parliament by will. 

This means as at the close of filing of nomination to contest the party’s upcoming parliamentary Primaries, these MPs didn’t file. 

Already, some popular names earlier announced their retirement from parliament including Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, MP for Suame. 

Others who also announced earlier were Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong and Samuel Atta Kyea MP for Abuakwa South since 2008 when he succeeded then candidate Akufo-Addo as MP. 

Another prominent MP to announce his retirement was Joseph Osei-Owusu popularly known as Joe Wise, MP for Bekwai and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Joe Ghartey, Dan Botwe Bow Out

Two former Presidential candidates of the NPP Joe Ghartey, MP for Essikado Ketan and MP for Okere Daniel Botwe did not pick form to contest the upcoming primary.  

Owuraku Aidoo, Francisca Oteng and Oforikrom’s Dr. Marfo

It appears most of the retiring Members of Parliament hail from Ashanti Region as more than 9 MPs from the region are not seeking reelection.

Honourable William Owuraku Aidoo, the MP for Afigya Kwabre South Constituency who has been in Parliament since 2013 announced he is not seeking reelection. 

The MP is said to be highly unpopular in the Constituency and could have had a reduced vote margin if he were to contest. 

Another MP whose early retirement from parliament fame as a surprise is the young MP from Kwabre Francisca Oteng Mensah.

The 1993-born MP made history when she entered Parliament as the youngest lawmaker in Ghana’s history in 2017 when she was sworn in. 

She won reelection in 2020 and is serving as Deputy Gender Minister of the Republic of Ghana. 

She is not going back to parliament. 

MP For Oforikrom Dr. Marfo quietly bowed out of Parliament after an unremarkable tenure from 2016. 

Ministers walk out of Parliament 

Dr. Kwaku Afriyie MP for Sefwi Wiaso Constituency and Minister of Environment Science and Technology who has been in Parliament since 2017 has bowed out. 

His colleague at the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta who is also MP for Atiwa West Constituency is also bowing out of Parliament after serving as MP since 2009.

Ebenezer Kojo Kum who is a Member of Parliament  for Ahanta West Constituency in the Western Region of Ghana is not going to back to parliament  due to ill health. He has been absent for several months from parliament. 

He was Minister for Chieftaincy before he was replaced with Stephen Asamoah Boateng. 

At the close of nomination at the New Juaben South Constituency, incumbent MP Nana Kwasi Adjei Boateng who has been in Parliament since 2013 did not file. 

Also Johnson Adu, MP for Ahafo Ano South West and Francis Manu-Adabor his counterpart at Ahafo Ano South-East both failed to file nomination to go back to parliament.

In the main Ahafo Ano North, MP Suleman Sanid said he is tired of the work in parliament. He did not file to to contest. 

Carlos Ahenkorah Bows Out 

One of the popular names to bow out of Parliament is Carlos Ahenkora MP for the Tema West Constituency who was first elected to parliament in 2017.

The NPP MP who supported Alan Kyeremateng as against Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is said to be unpopular in the Constituency and may lose if he contests. 

Another MP whose chances was said to be shaky is Benito Owusu-Bio, MP for Atwima Nwabiagya Constituency who has been in Parliament since 2005.
