Some aggrieved workers of Ghana’s foremost public service broadcaster, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) are demanding the sacking of the Director General of the corporation, Prof. Amin Alhassan, for allegedly poorly managing affairs of the institution

The workers made the demand for the immediate removal of Prof Amin Alhassan by hoisting banners within the premises of the GBC offices in Accra. Inscriptions on the banners, among others, called on the appointing authority ( i.e the President) to immediately relieve Prof Alhassan of his post given that his contract with the corporation has expired.

The protest for Prof Alhassan’s sacking comes days after he received the Electronic Media Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Year award from Globe Productions “for his innovation, leadership vision and outstanding practices that set him apart from the rest.”

Prof Alhassan, a seasoned academic with expertise in Development Communication Policy who had previously worked as a journalist with the Ghana News Agency and GBC, was appointed Director General in 2019 by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to serve for a period of four years.

It is unclear whether or not his contract, which expired on October 1, 2023, will be extended especially in the face of the protest asking him to not extend Prof Alhassan’s contract with the corporation.
