Guinea’s quarter final run in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, surprised many.

The performance is the foundation for today’s optimism despite being drawn in a tough group with reigning champions Senegal, former champions Cameroon, and The Gambia.

Their progress in recent times has coincided with the emergence of Mohamed Bayo, Aguibou Camara, and VfB Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy.

Guinea’s matches in Group C:

January 15

Cameroon – Guinea: 17h00 GMT, Charles-Konan-Banny Stadium, Yamoussoukro

January 19

Guinea – Gambia: 20h00 GMT, Charles-Konan-Banny Stadium, Yamoussoukro

January 23

Guinea – Senegal: 17h00 GMT, Stade Charles-Konan-Banny, Yamoussoukro

How they qualified:

Guinea had to wait for the last day of qualifiers to secure their ticket to Cote d’Ivoire. Despite not being in action on the day, it was Ethiopia and Malawi who played out to a goalless draw that saw the result being favorable to Guinea who finished second behind Egypt to go secure their ticket to Cote d’Ivoire.

Player to watch: Serhou Guirassy

Serhou Guirassy is late bloomer who is determined to make the most of his harvest season. After scoring eleven goals last season, many did not expect him to reach the heights he has this term. Yet, Guirassy has defied logic by scoring 19 goals from 16 matches for Vfb Stuttgart.

These numbers have filled him with confidence as he gets ready for his second AFCON affair.

He made his tournament debut at 27-years Guirassy.

Guirassy’s game is all about goals and no matter the how or where the chance falls, he is able to improvise and find the net. Right foot, left foot, head, sliding attempts, he scores them all.

The coach: Kaba Diawara

Since his appointment as head coach of the team in 2021, Kaba Diawara has won the respect of even his fiercest critics.

Once upon a time a television pundit, Diawara’s excellent communication skills and man management have served him well in his quest to create a strong Guinea team.

Like many modern coaches, he favors the 4-3-3 formation and its variations, with discipline and commitment as the key values that underpin his coaching.

Diawara will be guiding Guinea for the second consecutive AFCON in Ivory Coast this month.
