Mr. Mathias Abolga Abangbase is now a proud holder of a First-Class degree from the Regentropfen College of Applied Sciences (ReCAS) affiliated with the University for Development Studies.

But a few years ago, accessing tertiary education let alone achieving such a good degree from a pioneering university such as ReCas appeared out of his sight. But he had clung on to his unyielding spirit, the spirit that kept on telling him that it was possible if he worked hard and remained hopeful.

His torturous journey to getting a Senior High School education and eventually to a Diploma in Basic Education and subsequently a degree points to his resilience and it’s inspirational to many young persons who may be contemplating giving up.

Born in 1998 in Sumbrungu, near Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, little Mathias, with the little means of his family, proved enthusiastic about education and excelled as a pupil of the  Kolbia Primary and the Sumbrungu-Kolgo Junior High School. Poverty could not stop him from studying and passing his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as a candidate of the Dazongo Junior High School in 2015.

According to journalist Gaspard Ayuureneeya, Matthias took on arduous menial jobs after sitting the BECE in anticipation of financing his senior high school education.

“Mathias took up small-scale mining (galamsey), and yoghurt sales and also worked as a sales boy in a chop bar to finance his Senior High School education.

He migrated to Accra to struggle after his Senior High School Examination. While in Accra, Mathias heard about ReCAS from a friend, and with sales from yoghurt and financial support from family relations, he applied for a Diploma in Basic Education,” Mr Ayuureneeya wrote.

Matthias will, while studying, venture into poultry farming with mentorship and support from the University.

Later, the Founder and President of ReCAS, Rev Moses Asaah Awinogya would foot his school bills and support his business to thrive. Due to his diligence and excellence, he got a scholarship to pursue a degree program in Basic Education from the University after he got employed to teach at the Regentropen Basic School.

At the 6th congregation and 7th matriculation of Regentropfen College of Applied Sciences, he received an award and praise for his exemplary lifestyle and academic excellence.
