Mary Lou Retton, the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around gold medal in gymnastics, is currently fighting for her life in the ICU with a rare form of pneumonia.
Her daughter, McKenna Kelley, shared the news on Instagram on October 10, 2023, asking for prayers and donations to help with medical expenses.
“My mom is currently in the ICU fighting for her life,” Kelley wrote. “She has a rare form of pneumonia that is affecting her breathing.
She is not able to breathe on her own and is on a ventilator. We are asking for prayers and any help you can provide.”
Retton is one of the most iconic gymnasts in American history. She won five medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, including gold in the individual all-around competition.
She was just 16 years old at the time, and her victory inspired a generation of young girls to pursue their dreams.
After retiring from gymnastics, Retton became a successful motivational speaker and television commentator. She also has four daughters with her ex-husband, Shannon Kelley.
Retton’s illness has come as a shock to many, as she has always been known for her athleticism and healthy lifestyle.
However, her daughter says that the pneumonia has been very aggressive and that doctors are still trying to figure out what is causing it.
“This is a very difficult time for our family,” Kelley wrote. “We are asking for everyone’s support and understanding. We will continue to update you on her condition as we learn more.”
In the meantime, Retton’s fans and friends have rallied around her, offering prayers and support on social media. Many have also donated to the GoFundMe campaign that Kelley set up to help with medical expenses.
“Mary Lou is an inspiration to us all,” one fan wrote. “We are sending her our love and prayers during this difficult time.”
“Mary Lou, you are a fighter,” another fan wrote. “We know you will beat this.”
Retton’s illness is a reminder that even the healthiest people can get sick. It is also a reminder of the importance of community support during difficult times.
Retton’s fans and friends are rallying around her, offering prayers and support. We wish her a speedy recovery.
