Meet Ronnie Retton and Lois Retton

Ronnie Retton was a former college football player and minor league baseball player. He owned a company that repaired coal mining cables. Lois Retton was a stay-at-home mom.

Mary Lou Retton was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1968. She began taking gymnastics lessons at the age of four. By the time she was 12, she was one of the top gymnasts in the country.

In 1982, Mary Lou Retton’s parents made a big decision. They allowed her to move to Houston, Texas, to train with Bela Karolyi, one of the top gymnastics coaches in the world.

Moving to Houston was a big adjustment for Mary Lou. She was away from her family and friends, and she had to train very hard. But her parents were supportive every step of the way.

In 1984, Mary Lou Retton made history. She became the first American woman to win the Olympic gold medal in the individual all-around competition. She also won two silver medals and two bronze medals.

Mary Lou Retton’s parents were incredibly proud of her accomplishments. They knew that she had worked hard to achieve her dreams, and they were happy to see her success.
