The International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board has approved cricket’s return to the Olympics for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
Thursday’s decision by the executive board also means disciplines like flag football, a non-contact version of American football, squash, lacrosse and baseball/softball are now Olympic sports.
The decision will now be put to a vote on Monday, for IOC members to ratify or veto the board’s recommendation.
IOC president Thomas Bach said the new sports allow the Olympic movement to “engage with new athletes and fan communities”.
“Taking into consideration that these proposals and these sports are fully in line with the sports culture of our hosts in 2028, with the American sports culture, they will showcase iconic American sports to the world while bringing at the same time international sports to the United States,” Bach said.
Cricket’s has only ever been part of the Olympics once; in Paris 1900.
