Brazil and Al-Hilal forward Neymar is set to undergo surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee.
The 31-year-old sustained the injury during the 2-0 defeat by Uruguay on Tuesday.
He was stretchered off the pitch in tears after landing awkwardly in the first half of the 2026 World Cup qualifier in Montevideo.
A statement from the Al Gilal said: ”The medical tests “NEYMAR ” underwent, confirmed the Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Meniscus tear injury in his knee, he will be going through surgery and then a treatment program that will be determined later,”
Meanwhile, Ednaldo Rodrigues, the President of the Brazil Football Confederation, has released a statement sympathizing with Brazil’s all-time male top scorer.
“Brazilian and world football need Neymar healthy and recovered, because football is happier when he’s on the pitch,”
The injury is the latest setback for Neymar who has struggled with fitness in recent years.
Before joining Al Hilal from PSG, multiple ankle injuries ruled the Brazilian forward out of action for months over the past two season.
The same injuries kept him out of two World Cup games in Qatar last year.
