The paramount chief of the Bongo Traditional Area Naba Baba Salifu Alemyaarum has reminded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of his promise to ensure the construction of an airport in the Upper East Region.

During his visit to the region in July 2018, President Akufo-Addo made a firm pledge to bring the project, which has been in the pipeline for more than 3 decades, to fruition.

The president pledged a durbar in the Bongo District in response to a passionate appeal by the Bonaba, who had underscored the importance of such a transport system to the development of the region.

But 5 years down the line, the president and his government have failed to fulfil the promise.

Delivering a speech at this year’s Azambene Grand Durbar held over the weekend in Bongo, Naba Alemyaarum called on President Akufo-Addo to honour his pledge to the region.

The Bonaba pointed out that the airport is critical to the development of the region and its construction may suffer further delays if it is not commenced by the current administration.

“The airport is very important because a lot of people travel from here to Accra and beyond and businesses these days is very dangerous doing it through the road and so a lot of businessmen will prefer using air than the road,” he stated.

“If it is constructed, our neighbours can also patronize it because Burkina is close to the region and I believe that they will also feel safer going by air from Bolga to Tamale to go by air”.

He expressed worry that, “The next government might come and not have interest in the airport like he the president did and so our concern is that at least when he starts it, the next government cannot leave it”.

Speaking to Bolgatanga-based Dreamz Fm, the traditional ruler said the president had demonstrated great interest in the project when he brought the matter before him and should, at least, commence its construction before his tenure expires.

“He has got the interest to do it and we see him as a development president and whatever he says he tries to honour it. We will be very grateful (if he starts work on the project). In fact he has done a lot for the us in the region but we think he will leave a very good legacy if this airport is constructed during his tenure of office”.

Meanwhile, Airport Project Committee, an advocacy group for the project has disclosed that it will start preparatory work at the proposed site at Anteem in anticipation of the commencement of construction works.

Leader of the group Gabriel Agambila, while calling on residents to support the group’s advocacy, said it will, in the coming days, deplore various means including staging a peaceful demonstration to drum home their demand for the building of the project.
