Granit Xhaka has said former club Arsenal showed him “little respect” and “wanted to get rid” before his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen.

The Swiss midfielder left Arsenal after 297 games, 23 goals and 29 assists. He also won two FA Cups with the Gunners.

Looking back on his time in North London, the former Arsenal captain said: “Arsenal showed me little respect even though I was the captain.

“It was clear they wanted to get rid of me — apart from one person: Arteta. With my heart & soul, I had already left the club. Mikel told me he wanted me to stay.”

Xhaka would eventually leave after Arsenal agreed a 21 million fee with Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite Arsenal’s doubts Xhaka has gone on to assert himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe.

Xhaka has started all 15 of their league matches so far this season, playing all but 22 minutes.

The Swiss has made more passes into the final third – 164, than any midfielder in Europe’s top seven leagues.

That is nine more than the next best, with the rest of the top five consisting of Girona’s Aleix Garcia, Manchester City’s Rodri, Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, and Girona’s Daley Blind.
