Having won the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on three occasions Nigeria will make a 20th appearance, this time, in Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles will be in Ivory Coast with an array of talent, led by talismanic striker Victor Osimhen. While Osimhen is the most high profile of Nigeria’s team, the Super Eagles can boast of elite talents such as Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi, and Moses Simon.

Nigeria’s previous successes came in 1980, 1994 and in 2013.

– January 14, 2024: Nigeria vs. Equatorial Guinea, 2:00 p.m. GMT, Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé

– January 18, 2024: Ivory Coast vs. Nigeria, 4:00 p.m. GMT, Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé

– January 22, 2024: Guinea-Bissau vs. Nigeria, 5:00 p.m. GMT, Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny, Abidjan

Qualification Path:

Jose Peseiro’s men lost to Guinea Bissau in an otherwise unblemished campaign. Nigeria finished with 15 points ahead of Guinea Bissaue (13), Sierra Leone (5) and Sao Tome and Principe (1).

The Super Eagles averaged 3.7 goals per match, scored 22 goals in total and conceded four goals in the process.

On June 13, 2023, Nigeria recorded the biggest win of the Qualifiers when they beat Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 away from home. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen led the rout with four goals on the night.

Osimhen’s four goals in the rout of Sao Tome and Principe ensured he finished as the top scorer in the AFCON 2023 Qualifiers with 10 goals.

In December, Osimhen was named as the best male footballer player at the recent CAF Awards. Osimhen was recognized for leading Napoli to a first Serie A title in 30 years.

The Nigerian made history by becoming the first African player to claim the prestigious Italian Serie A golden boot award, also known as the ‘Capocannoniere, as he finished the season with 26 goals.

Osimhen has drawn comparison’s with legendary Ivorian striker, Didier Drogba.

Just like Drogba, Osimhen has strong aerial ability, brilliant hold-up play, goalscoring instincts and remarkable technical ability to go with.

Even more than Drogba, Osimhen has exceptional speed due to his relatively slender frame.

Portuguese trainer Jose Peseiro will lead the Super Eagles at next months tournament

Ivory Coast 2023 will be Jose Peseiro’s first taste of Africa’s flagship football tournament.

The Portuguese was appointed in 2022 Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro will be working in Africa’s flagship tournament for the first time.

A UEFA Cup finalist in 2005 with Braga, the 63-year-old is a pragmatic strategist.

Peseiro’s tactical approach draws inspiration from his playing days at Torreense club, advocating possession-based football with an offensive objective. 

Emphasizing intense and immediate counter-pressing when possession is lost, Peseiro’s coaching philosophy aligns with the dynamic style embraced by his squad.
