Franz Beckenbauer was a German football legend who transcended the sport to become a national icon.

Born in 1945, he began his career as a midfielder, but blossomed as a central defender, often credited with pioneering the modern sweeper role. His elegant, attacking style from the back redefined defensive play, making him a true game-changer.

Beckenbauer’s trophy cabinet overflowed with accolades. He captained Bayern Munich to four Bundesliga titles and three European Cups, and led West Germany to World Cup victories in 1974 and 1982.

He even conquered America, winning two NASL titles with the New York Cosmos.

Individually, his achievements were equally dazzling, with two Ballon d’Or awards, the only defender in history to receive such recognition.

But Beckenbauer’s impact stretched beyond the pitch. His charismatic personality and leadership made him a natural ambassador for the sport, and he played a pivotal role in securing Germany’s hosting rights for the 2006 World Cup.

Later, he served as Bayern Munich’s president, guiding them to further Champions League and Bundesliga triumphs.
