Defending champion of the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic survived a second-round scare before dispatching Alexei Popyrin.

Djokovic recovered from a sluggish start to win 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena.

Chasing a record-extending 11th men’s title in Melbourne, Djokovic struggled against the Australian Popyrin who put up a spirited performance.

Cheered by a partisan home crowd, Popyrin tested Djokovic for three hours and 11 minutes before the world number one secured victory.

“I don’t think I played at the highest level,”

Djokovic said.”I didn’t do anything special – he was a better player for a set and a half. Things changed around and the momentum shifted in the tie-break.”

Djokovic’s next opponent is Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

The Argentine dispatched Andy Murray in straight sets on Monday, and won 6-4 6-4 6-4 against Gael Monfils.
