The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended the Northern Regional Vice Chairman, Alhaji Gbewaa over the assault of the Northern Regional Treasurer of the party, Hajia Shamima Yakubu.
The decision was made at a meeting in Accra between Regional and National Executives of the NDC to pave the way for investigation into the incident currently being handled by the police
The Northern Regional Vice Chairman, Alhaji Gbewaa, was arrested and subsequently granted bail in connection with the assault of a colleague executive over what is yet to be made public.
His arrest resulted in a protest by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tamale. The angry party supporters stormed the NDC Northern Regional party office and locked it up.
They also stormed other constituency offices and locked it up to register their displeasure about the arrest of their regional vice chairman.
Meanwhile, a statement signed by the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey , has condemned the assault of the Northern Regional Treasurer of the NDC , Hajia Shamima Yakubu.
“The leadership of the National Democratic Congress has learnt with shock and disappointment, reports of a physical attack on the person of Hajia Shamima Yakubu, the Northern Regional Treasurer of the party, by a regional party officer. The party condemns in the strongest possible terms this assault on a party official, resulting in her treatment at a hospital”.
The General Secretary of the NDC indicated that the NDC takes a very serious view of the conduct of the party officer responsible for the assault, and at the next meeting of its Functional Executive Committee meeting, measures would be taken to address the matter thoroughly to leave no doubt in everyone’s mind that the party does not approve of unlawful acts of assault and battery.
