Italian authorities ban Sandro Tonali for 10 months for breaching betting rules

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will serve a 10-month ban from all football related activities after the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) convicted him of breaching betting rules.

After pleading guilty to illegal betting and gambling, Tonali has been banned for 18 months, but commuted to 10 on the condition that he undergoes eight months of rehabilitation.

In addition, Tonali will make 16 public appearances at amateur clubs, federal training centers and charities dealing with gambling addiction in Italy.

The 23-year-old will be out of action and as a result, will miss next years European Championships in Germany should Italy qualify.

Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina told Sky Sports Italia: “An agreement has been reached between the federal prosecutor and Sandro Tonali. The plea agreement is for 18 months, of which eight months is for rehabilitation, which involves therapeutic activity and making at least 16 public appearances.
