Kumasi Traditional Council clears Wontumi; warns chiefs to stay away from politics

Reports from various sections of the media indicate that Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako known popularly as Wontumi has been cleared by the Kumasi Traditional Council.
He was cleared after a chief argued in his favour stating that the Chairman was talking about his political kingdom and not the Ashanti Kingdom.
Reports say his accusers, Kokosuhene, and Nana Kwaku Duah, were advised to abstain from bringing political issues to the Manhyia Palace.
“The constitution says that chiefs should refrain from active politics… when the comments were being made Nana Kokosohene should have left the moment, he heard Wontumi say that he cannot even challenge a statement made by the Okyeame – he shouldn’t have sat there,” the chief said in Twi.
This was after he failed to appear before the council last week because of claims that he was ill.
Wontumi was summoned over some unsavoury words he used against Otumfuo Osei Tutu during the parliamentary vetting of the political party.
Some chiefs suggested that if the NPP Chairman is not produced, the political party will be banned from campaigning in the region and his media outfit closed down.
