The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Suame constituency in the Ashanti Region, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has justified why the New Patriotic Party (NPP) elected Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2024 elections.
He indicated that it was based on his competence in handling the economy among other factors.
In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mensah-Bonsu stated, “He’s been elected because, at this time in the nation’s development, some of us believe that the critical thing to look at is who has the knowledge, competence, vision and experience to help us reposition the economy; someone who’s strong in financial management.”
He clarified that the decision was not influenced by Dr. Bawumia’s religious or ethnic background, saying, “He’s been elected because, at this time in the nation’s development, some of us believe that the critical thing to look at is who has the knowledge, competence, vision and experience to help us reposition the economy; someone who’s strong in financial management.”
Regarding the competition within the party, Mensah-Bonsu acknowledged the qualifications of other aspirants but highlighted that Dr. Bawumia’s competence in economic matters led to his overwhelming support within the party. “It wasn’t as if none of them qualified to be the leader, but in terms of who had greater competence to handle the economy, we felt that it was Dr Bawumia, and that is why the overwhelming majority elected him to be the candidate,” he noted.
Dr. Bawumia secured 61% of the votes from over 200,000 NPP delegates, outperforming his competitors. Despite some critics downplaying the victory, Mensah-Bonsu asserted that Dr. Bawumia’s performance was commendable for a first-time contender.
Responding to criticisms from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the state of the Ghanaian economy, Mensah-Bonsu defended Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, stating that the NPP made the right decision by choosing him as the party’s leader. “I think we’ve killed three birds with one stone,” he said, referring to dispelling notions of the party being Akan-centric, breaking religious barriers, and addressing the regional and ethnic balance.
Dr. Bawumia, in asserting his vision as the new leader of the NPP, outlined his priorities for a “food self-sufficient, data-driven, and systems-based nation.” He emphasized that he would govern as an independent leader with his own distinct vision, guided by divine intervention.
