Manchester United teenager Kobby Mainoo could yet play for the Black Stars of Ghana despite representing England at youth level.
Mainoo has become the toast of English football fans after his impressive performance against Everton in Sunday’s Premier League on Sunday.
The Stockport born midfielder has already represented England’s U17, U18 and U19 teams – with an U21 call up said to be on the horizon.
However, Mainoo could still play for Ghana, who are more likely to give him an early debut in the event of a call up, than England.
Although Mainoo is reportedly not thinking about the choice yet, sources say the midfield sensation will be looking at the best path possible to a successful international career, when the time comes.
Ghana’s advantage, if any, lies in his Ghanaian ancestry and the guarantee of more playing than he would enjoy in the Three Lions camp.
Mainoo was born to Ghanaian parents, Felix Mainoo and Abena Herold.
However, England is where Mainoo has lived all his life. He was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester in 2005.
After debuting at the Cheadle and Gatley Junior Football Academy, Kobby Mainoo joined the Manchester United Academy at the age of nine.
If Mainoo chooses to represent Ghana, he will became the latest former England youth international to represent another country after Ben Brereton Diaz (Chile), Tariq Lamptey (Ghana), Demarai Gray (Jamaica) and Ademola Lookman (Nigeria).
