Former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku has disclosed that his support for the candidature of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party as its flagbearer for the 2024 elections is his democratic right.
According to him, though he is a member of the National Council of the party representing the Eastern Region, it is his right to decide on which candidate to support to lead the party just like the others.
Rubbishing some propaganda against him on Accra-based Peace FM, the Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) stated that no one can be intimidated or coerced into supporting a particular candidate as claimed by some of the aspirants and their supporters.
“I am a representative of the Eastern Region on the National Council together with Boakye Agyarko, Dr. Annor plus the Regional Executives. Dr Annor was helping Hon Alan Kyeremanten, Hon Boakye Agyarko was an aspirant and I was supporting Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia but we all represent Eastern Region on the National Council. We all did not come to a compromise to support one candidate. This implies there can never be intimidation on the National Council”, he disclosed.
Asked why all failed to support one candidate he responded” it is democracy and we are not barred from supporting our preferred candidates and there is absolutely nothing wrong in that respect. You have a vote at the National Council”
It would be recalled that one of the reasons the founder of the Movement for Change cited for his exit from the NPP was acts of intimidation prior and during the Super Delegates Conference on August 26, 2023.
“After having carefully analysed the results of the said elections, it is absolutely clear to me from events leading to, during and after the elections, that the Special Delegates Conference was strategically and tactically skewed in favour of one particular Aspirant.
“The pronouncements made by some leading Members of our Party both before and after the elections, also lend weight to my observations”, he said in a statement issued yesterday after he cancelled a scheduled public address.
Mr Kyerematen placed third in the NPP Super Delegates Congress held on Saturday, August 26, when he polled 95 votes representing 10.82 per cent of the total votes cast in the election won by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who won 629 votes, representing 68.15 per cent of the total valid votes.
