Nation’s FC coach defends penalty decision against Kotoko

Head coach of Nations F.C, Kassim Ocansey, has defended referee Latif Qadir’s decision to award a penalty against Asante Kotoko in Sunday’s league match.

The referee awarded a penalty to Nation’s F.C for a handball against Augustine Agyapong despite what appeared to be a push on Kotoko defender Nurudeen Mohammed.

Speaking in the post match interview, Ocansey said there was no question about the legitimacy of the penalty decision.

”It was an obvious penalty. You can’t deny it. A clear penalty. Immediately it happened here, I started calling for the penalty.

The decision sparked violence as angry fans of Asante Kotoko destroyed seats and other equipment at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in protest against the referee’s decision to award a stoppage time penalty to the home team.

The fans forced a 10 minute stoppage in additional time, throwing more object and destroying plastic seats at the venue in protest of a late penalty awarded by referee Latif Qadir.

But shortly after Nations FC’s Amidou Diarra converted the penalty, violence resumed as the irate fans pelted anyone in sight with the plastic seats, bottles of water and anything they could lay their hands on.

The Ghana Football Association, who have still not taken action against their security official who strangled a sports journalist, Seidu Adamu, is yet to comment on the matter.
