The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is today marking the 42nd Anniversary of its 31st December Revolution at the Ashalley Botwe Old Town Park in Adenta, Accra.
The ceremony spearheaded by the Functional Executive Committee and the cadre corps of the party is under the theme: “Building the Ghana We Want: Revisiting the Decade that Stopped the Decay[1982-1992].”
Speakers at the ceremony include party National Chairman Johnson, Asiedu Nketiah; General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey; MP for Korle Klottey, Zanetor Rawlings; MP for Adenta, Adamu Ramadan; and NDC Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Nii Ashie More.
The 31st December Revolution
On December 31, 1981, the democratically elected Government of the People’s National Party(PNP) led by Dr. Hilla Limann, a career diplomat was overthrown by Flight Lt. Jerry John Rawlings and a handful of enlisted former soldiers. This was called the 31st December Revolution. The main reasons for the overthrow of Limann’s Government were the failure of it to deal with
the continuing decline in the economy outlook of the country; escalating corruption; and the widening of the gap between rich and poor. Rawlings and his men installed the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), which later became the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after the end of the military rule.
The NDC marks the 31st December Revolution every year, to among others, reiterate the ideals based on which the 4th Republic was brought forth; probity, accountability, freedom and justice.
