Reports in Italy suggest Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has accepted a 10-month ban from playing football after breaking anti-betting regulations.
According to a report in La Gazetta dello Sport, Tonali and his lawyers have agreed a deal in principle with prosecutors to plead guilty to betting on football matches, including those of AC Milan and Brescia, teams he played for.
Last week, Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli, was banned for seven months with a commitment to follow an anti-gambling treatment plan. The Italy midfielder also agreed to testify in prosecutions against compulsive and illegal gambling at some non-professional clubs.
It is understood that Tonali’s willingness to collaborate and give testimony that was useful in other prosecutions, was significant in determining what is evidently a significantly less sentence than Italy’s anti-betting regulations prescribe.
The agreement between Tonali and prosecutors will the midfielder to be able to continue training with Newcastle and will also have access to the club’s facilities, unlike with doping sanctions.
Tonali can now play his last game for Newcastle, pending agreement on the sanction once his guilt has been acknowledged.
