All sixteen (16) members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) who were standing trial before the Achimota Magistrate Court for conspiracy to commit crime and rioting have been convicted and fined GHC2400.00 each.
The magistrate convicted each person to 200 penalty units after they all pleaded guilty to the charges.
Sixteen persons had on October 7, 2023 invaded the premises of UTV, a television station in Accra, and disrupted a live broadcast of the United Showbiz programme claiming that the entertainment programme had become political in nature and therefore the NPP deserved to have representation on the show.
They were subsequently arrested and arraigned before the magistrate court.
They have today, October 16, 2023, been convicted and fined.
Many on social media have described the punishment as too lenient – a slap on the wrist.
