Renowned activist and leader of the #FixTheCountry and #OccupyJulorbiHouse movements, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has taken a backseat from the forefront of the two movements after dedicating three impactful years of his life to them.
In a poignant tweet, Barker-Vormawor shared the personal sacrifices and daunting challenges he encountered during his tenure as a champion of these movements.
“Over the past three years, a substantial part of my life has been devoted to mobilizing and supporting the #FixTheCountry and now #OccupyJulorbiHouse movements,” he revealed in his tweet, underscoring his profound commitment to these social causes.
The activist outlined the hardships he faced, ranging from the confiscation of his passport and the imposition of a travel ban to enduring a treason trial, experiencing five arrests, and spending time in jail on three separate occasions.
He also delved into the impact on his academic pursuits, with his PhD program at Cambridge put on hold and the loss of an adjunct teaching role.
Barker-Vormawor highlighted the personal toll, citing instances of cyberbullying, surveillance of his home and communication devices, and being separated from his family.
“I’ve been separated from family, expended my life savings to support the movement financially and logistically. I believe I’ve served my country all too well,” he reflected on the sacrifices made for the sake of social justice.
Expressing the necessity for a transition, Barker-Vormawor called for new faces, new individuals, and fresh energy to lead the #FixTheCountry movement.
“Now I think it is time for others to step up and carry the people’s movement forward. #FixTheCountry needs new faces; new people and new energy. This is the time for a proper transition, for the movement to renew itself,” he declared.
Looking ahead, Barker-Vormawor expressed hope for a new politics, emphasizing empathy and routine social justice.
“The dream is for a new politics. Where empathy leads and social justice is routine must endure,” he added, signaling a call for a continued commitment to these principles even as he steps back from the forefront of the movements he championed.
