Pele’s former club Santos have been relegated for the first time in their 111-year history after a 2-1 home loss to Fortaleza in the final fixtures of Brazil’s Serie A.

Santos were one of three clubs, along with Sao Paulo and Flamengo, never to have been relegated from Brazil’s top flight.

However, the coastal club’s rotten run of form in the homestretch; five games without a victory saw them drop to 17th in the standings with 43 points.

Santos FC finished the season with 43 points, one behind Bahia and two adrift of Vasco da Gama.

Meanwhile, Palmeiras have been crowned champions with 70 points, two ahead of Gremio who settle for second place.
