Palestinian author, poet, lecturer, and activist Refaat Alareer was born in the Gaza Strip.
As a creative writing and literature instructor at the Islamic University of Gaza, he made a substantial contribution to education.
Alareer was a co-founder of the group We Are Not Numbers, which helped young writers in Gaza connect with seasoned writers through mentorship.
In 2001, he graduated with a BA in English from the Islamic University of Gaza. In 2007, he earned an MA from University College London.
Later on, Universiti Putra Malaysia awarded Alareer a Ph.D. in English literature.
Two collections of Palestinian short stories, “Gaza Writes Back” (2014) and “Gaza Unsilenced” (2015), were edited by Alareer.
