Richard Roundtree was an American actor who passed away on October 24, 2023, at the age of 81, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was best known for his role as private detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft, and its four sequels, released between 1972 and 2019.
Roundtree’s portrayal of Shaft was groundbreaking, as it was one of the first times a Black man had been featured in a leading role in a major Hollywood film.
Roundtree’s success in Shaft led to a long and successful career in film and television. He appeared in a variety of films, including Live and Let Die (1973), Shaft’s Big Score!* (1972), Hell Up in Harlem (1973), 99 and 44/100% Dead (1974), Busting (1974), Inchon* (1981), Any Given Sunday* (1999), and Barbershop* (2002).
