Queen mother of Afigya Kwabre in the Ashanti Region and Executive Director of the Obaapa Development Foundation, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to Gender Mainstreaming and Capacity Building of Women and Girls through education and advocacy,

Nanahemaa Adwoa Awindor has called on girls to be assertive when they are confronted with the issue of being forced into marriages.

 She explained that girls ought to stand up and fight for their rights and resist the pressure of their parents and guardians regarding child marriage even as non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders tackle the canker.

This was contained in Nanahemaa Awindor’s speech during a two-day capacity building workshop for traditional rulers organised jointly by the UNFPA and her NGO on the issue of child marriage under the theme,”Ending Child Marriage in Ghana One Paramouncy at a Time”.

The Queen mother added that traditional leaders had a pivotal role to play ending the menace of teenage pregnancy and child marriage, urging them to work assiduously towards ending the problem through working with other stakeholders and law enforcement agencies.

The Obaapa Development Foundation has empowered thousands of girls and women through their work in education, advocacy, training and programmes.
