MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca is being processed to face charges in court after he was arrested by Turkish Police on Tuesdah.
Faruk has been arrested for assaulting referee Halil Umut Meler on Monday, during a Turkish top flight match against Caykur Rizespor.
He ran unto the pitch after the referee awarded a 90+7minutes penalty against Ankaragucu in the Super Lig last night.
Faruk was joined by other players and officials as they continuously assaulted the helpless referee even after he fell down.
Meter was rushed the hospital after the match and was promptly admitted at the hospital.
Following the incident, authorities suspended all football leagues in the country.
“The matches in all leagues have been postponed indefinitely,” Turkish FA [TFF] chairman Mehmet Buyukeksi told a news conference.
“This attack is a night of shame for Turkish football,” he added.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said Koca and two others were formally arrested for “injuring a public official”.
Tunc said Koca and two others had been arrested after prosecutors took statements and a judicial control decision had been imposed on three other suspects.
“The investigation is continuing meticulously,” he added.
Koca has since issued a statement announcing his resignation as club president and apologising for his actions.
“No matter how great an injustice or how wrong [the officiating] was, nothing can legitimise or explain the violence that I perpetrated,” he said.
“I apologise to the Turkish refereeing community, the sports public and our nation.” He added he felt “great embarrassment” for the “grave incident that I caused” but hoped it could help Turkish football address its “culture of violence”.
