Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman of Fomena in the Ashanti Region,  Mr Akwasi Nti has hinted they are going to plant another independent candidate to contest the current Member of Parliament (MP) Lawyer Andrew Asiamah Amoako following the party’s decision not to declare the Fomena as an orphan constituency.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday, December 2023 held its parliamentary Primaries in One Hundred and Eleven (111) constituencies where the party does not have sitting MPs.

In the list of constituencies, the party released ahead of its primaries, the party omitted Fomena Constituency which per the description of the NPP is an orphan constituency.

But speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Pure FM, the Former Constituency Chairman stressed that, the decision of the party is a signal that the NPP is going into opposition.

Chairman Akwasi Nti also stressed that, if the party fails to declare Fomena as an orphan constituency, he together with other executives in the area will bring another independent candidate to unseat the current Member of Parliament Mr Andrews Asiamah who is also the Second Deputy Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

“There’s an independent candidate coming, and we are not going to listen to anybody. We are going to repeat exactly what Asiamah did in Fomena. NPP will regret this time.  The next independent candidate is going to be Mr Philip Ofori-Asante who contested on the ticket of the NPP in 2020”. He threatened.

Lawyer Andrew Asiamah Amoako won the Fomena parliamentary seat during the December 2020 elections with 12,805 votes, defeating his main opponent, his former party’s Philip Ofori-Asante, who secured 10,798 votes. Hon Asiamah Amoako became the only independent candidate to win in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

He was later in Parliament elected as the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament in the 8th Parliament of Ghana.
