The Local Organizing Committee of the postponed 2023 African Games launched a 100-day countdown to the 13th edition of the Games.

Ghana will host the Games for the first time in March 2024 with 54 countries, and 30 sporting disciplines, 8 of which will be qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

A team of journalists, sports administrators, project leads and sports enthusiasts line up ahead of the inspection that preceded the launch

The Games was originally scheduled to be held in August 2023 but have been postponed until 8 March 2024.

The was due to the impasse between the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), African Sports Confederation, and the African Union (AU).

But even before the impasse, delays in the completion of the facilities for the games meant a postponement was inevitable.

The launch of the 100-day countdown began with an inspection of the under-construction facilities at the Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium with Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Sports Minister Mustapha Mustapha Ussif.

Speaking at the Launch at the quadrangle of the games village, Dr. Bawumia said: “The African Games has been organized on 12 occasions by nine different countries. Out of the nine countries, Algeria, Congo Brazzaville, and Nigeria have each organized and hosted the games on two occasions.”

“However, despite having Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana as a founding member of the game, the question is why Ghana has not hosted the African games until now. The answer is simple. There is a time for everything, and this is our time. Ghana is now ready, willing, and capable to organize and host Africa in the biggest sporting competition on the continent.” Dr. Bawumia said.

“The African Games is seen as a major avenue to highlight sports as a means to create jobs for the youth of Africa. The games also offer the opportunity to leverage sports as a tool for comprehensive sustainable socio-cultural and economic development.” -He added.
