The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee assigned to investigate the leaked IGP tape, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, has said the committee is going to launch an investigation to find out who is spreading false reports on the committee’s work.

He has also described the report as “lies and mischief,” adding that such individuals can be dragged on the floor of parliament and charged with contempt of Parliament.

The investigation into the matter, according to Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, who is also the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South Constituency, has become necessary after some sections of the media earlier reported that the Parliamentary Committee investigating the leaked IGP tape had cleared Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of any wrongdoing.

In the said report, which has had wider coverage in the media since yesterday, the Atta Akyea Committee, after a thorough investigation, recommended that the three senior officers, identified as COP Alex Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Eric Emmanuel Gyebi, should be further investigated and potentially prosecuted for perjury.

It also stated that the tape revealed a conspiracy among three senior police officers to remove the IGP from his position, adding that the actions were deemed to violate the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29) and showed professional misconduct under the Police Service Act, 1970 (Act 350) and the Police Service Regulations, 2012, (C.I. 76).

The committee, according to the said report, found that all allegations made against the IGP were unsubstantiated.

But speaking on Angel FM Kumasi in an interview on the show “Angel in the Morning,” Mr. Atta Akyea categorically said, “They are all lies and mischief”.

“So those behind this must be careful because if we find out that they are telling lies, they will suffer. You can be charged with contempt. So we are going to investigate it to know where it is coming from. They are all lies, it’s untrue.” Hon Atta Akyea told Kwame Tanko the host of the show Angel in the Morning.
