The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed optimism that the decision of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to interdict some headmasters and headmistresses for allegedly charging unapproved fees will be reversed. He stated that after a meeting with the GES and other stakeholders, an “imminent reinstatement” of the embattled heads of senior high schools is in the offing.
Mr Musah speaking after a closed-door meeting between the top management of GES, leaders of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and representatives of the Conference of Assisted Heads of Senior High Schools (CHASS) today.
“This development[ meeting with the other stakeholders] suggests a positive outcome from the discussions, signalling the imminent reinstatement of the interdicted Senior High School heads,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Accra FM.
Eleven heads of senior high schools have found themselves in trouble after it came to light that they were charging first-year students some unapproved fees.
The heads – Mrs Selina Anane Afoakwa, Headmistress of Kumasi Girls SHS; Mr Nataniel Asamoah, Headmaster of Asanteman SHS; Mr Andrews Boateng, Headmaster of Kumasi Senior High Technical School; and Mr Kwadwo Obeng-Appiah, Headmaster of Manso-Edubia SHS; Mr Daniel Boamah Duku, Headmaster of Agric Nzema Community SHS; Ms Gladys Sarfowah, Headmistress of Nkawie Senior High Technical School; and Mr Ampong Ahmed Omar, Headmaster of Collins SHS; Mr Afi Yaw Stephen, Headmaster of Berekum Senior High School; Mr Joseph Jilinjeh Abudu, Headmaster of Odomaseman Senior High School; and the Headmistress of the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASS), Patience Naki Mensah – who were asked to step aside for their actions, are set to be reinstated.
The decision had received mixed reactions from the public. While many praised the GES for the swift action, others blamed the GES for pushing them to charge fees by failing to supply them with what is needed to run the schools smoothly.
