Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Stephen Yakubu is optimistic that an airport will be constructed in the Upper East Region soonest as the Government continues engagement with a private mining company to fulfil the promise of building an airport for the people of the region.

Mr Yakubu, who described the airport as a much-needed facility that will boost the local economy of the region, urged the people of the region to give the government all the backing it needs, notwithstanding their political affiliations, to be able to construct the airport.

Speaking at a durbar of the Chiefs and people of the Upper East Region held in the town of  Sumbrungu, Mr Yakubu said that he would work with the Airport Development Committee to fast-track the construction of the facility.

“A mining company in the region had shown interest in the construction, and the government was engaging the company to conclude on the necessary terms and conditions,” the Minister said.

The people of the Upper East Region have been calling for an airport in the region so as to facilitate travel in and out of the region. The region remains the only “old” region without an airport.
