The Ghana National Association Teachers (GNAT), the largest teacher union in the country, has launched a fervent appeal to all its members yet to acquire the National Identification Card ( the Ghana Card) to do their best to register for the card as soon as possible.

GNAT urged them to act swiftly to acquire the card as a “matter of national importance”, adding that getting the card is a “very urgent” thing to do.

“Important Reminder: Dear Comrades, I wish to encourage all members who have not registered and acquired their GHANA CARDs with the NIA, to do so as a matter of national importance. Very Urgent! “Thomas T. Musah, General Secretary of GNAT said in a statement to address to all members.

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department has set March 2024 as the deadline for the acquisition of the Ghana Card by all public sector workers who receive their salaries from the department. The Accountant General Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem warned that workers risked losing their salaries if they failed to get the card by the deadline.

Even though some labour unions have argued that the Controller and Accountant General’s Department does not have any right to deny workers salaries for not having the Ghana Card, they are taking steps to ensure that their members acquire the card as soon as practicable.
