The blues, and soul singer Marlena Shaw was a compelling vocalist who had a lasting impression on the music industry.

Her musical career started at the age of ten, when she and her trumpeter uncle Jimmy Burgess captivated audiences at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. She was born in 1942.

Despite her mother’s early disapproval of traveling, Shaw’s love of music was uncontrollable.

She flourished in the 1960s, signing a record deal with Chess Records and became the first to achieve success with “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” a poignant cover of an instrumental song by Cannonball Adderley.

Shaw demonstrated her flexibility with a wide range of songs in her career, including the upbeat songs “California Soul” and the melancholic “Woman of the Ghetto.”

She created history in 1972 when she became the first female signee of Blue.

Who Are Her Parents?
