It is now customary for Ghana’s national teams to meet with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before major competitions.

The Black Stars were the latest beneficiaries of this gesture when Akufo-Addo held a farewell dinner for the team on Tuesday night in an event that was strictly by invitation.

Not even members of the Ghanaian press were invited.

Since then, however, details of the event and the President’s message to the team has leaked.

In not so many words, Akufo-Addo, a Real Madrid and Asante Kotoko fan, urged the team to reflect Ghana’s rich AFCON history.

”We have to go a step further than second places recorded in 1968, 1970, 1992, 2010, and 2015 and bring the 42-year drought to an end. The task might appear daunting but it is possible’’ President Akufo-Addo said.

”I watch many of you every weekend thanks to Digital Satellite TV. Indeed, many Ghanaians also do the same and we see you competing with the World’s best players. For instance, it was insightful to know that Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace is the most fouled player in the English Premier League”.

‘‘Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique are teams we have beaten before and I am confident we will emerge out of the group. There will be no repeat of the events of AFCON 2022 – know very well that you have the support of Ghanaians”

”Go all out and make us proud. Government with the active support of the Ghana Football Association have made all the arrangements necessary to make this team succeed” President Akufo-Addo added.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, before facing Egypt and Mozambique in the other Group B games.
