Of the twenty-four teams to arrive in Cote d’Ivoire for the Africa Cup of Nations, Mali may have made the grandest entry yet.

The Eagles of Mali were met by thousands of flag-waving Malian football fans who thronged the Ivorian capital of Abidjan.

The thousands formed a guard of honor from the Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport, greeting the team with cheers and words of encouragement.

Officially, there are 300,000 registered Malians in Ivory Coast and if Friday’s spectacle was anything to go by, then the Eagles will not lack support when the tournament kicks off.

Mali have been drawn against 2004 champions Tunisia, 1996 winners South Africa and Namibia.

Mali will begin their AFCON 2023 campaign on Tuesday when they face South Africa at the Gon Amadou Coulibally Stadium at 8 PM.

They will then face Tunisia on Saturday, January 20, 2024 before ending their group stage campaign with a fairly negotiable test with Namibia four days later.
