Alhaji Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Yendi constituency under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said he won in the recent parliamentary primaries amidst controversy.

The turmoil arose during the ballot counting process on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

Despite the absence of an official declaration, both Farouk Mahama and his contender, Hajia Abibata Shani, claimed victory independently.

Reports indicated a dispute over the results, leading to uncertainty about the rightful winner in the constituency.

The Electoral Commission stated no recognized victor, while the NPP awaited a comprehensive report on the incident.

Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, addressing the matter on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, rebuffed Abibata’s assertions of triumph, accusing her of disseminating falsehoods.

He asserted his victory based on the vote count, claiming 495 votes in his favor, while disregarding his opponent’s tally as insignificant.

Additionally, Farouk disclosed that an NPP official had reached out to their General Secretary, Justin Kodua, after the vote count.

Allegedly, Kodua instructed the recognition of Farouk as the winner.

Farouk went further to demand the arrest of Abibata’s brother, whom he accused of disrupting the elections.

He alleged a premeditated scheme to disrupt the electoral process due to his opponents’ anticipation of his victory, dismissing all allegations against him as baseless and attributing them to his rivals’ intentions to incite chaos.
