The Government of Canada has warned its citizens who are Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transgender, Queer etc to carefully weigh life risk before visiting Ghana
The Canada government says such travelers to Ghana face “increased risk” since the Anti-LGBTQI bill was laid before parliament.
The Canadian government says “2SLGBTQI+ persons and their allies have been victims of violence and discrimination”
The government therefore advised LGBTQI citizens of Canada who want to visit Ghana to “carefully consider the risks” before boarding a plane to come.
The Parliament of Ghana is expected to pass the anti-gay bill, which is set to tighten laws against members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The bill is officially known as the 2021 Promotion of Appropriate Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Moreover, the bill seeks to withdraw health services from the LGBTQI community, including HIV medication.
Sam George warned the US not to interfere with plans to pass the bill into law, threatening to halt Ghana’s business interests in the country.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, stated LGBTQ+ practices are strongly abhorred and will not be allowed to take root in the country.
Rightify Ghana, a human rights organization in Ghana, believes that the passing of this bill erodes progress towards fighting HIV and AIDS.
The statement warned of the potential for international law violations if the bill passed, and stated, “Given that LGBTI people are present in every family and every community it is not very difficult to imagine how, if it were to be adopted, this legislation could create a recipe for conflict and violence.”
